SHAURUA CHAKRA AWARD (POSTHUMOUSLY) TO WILDLIFE LOVER LATE SHRI GANGA RAM BISHNOI
The Bishnois in Rajasthan have great love and respect for wildlife. Scores of Bishnois have sacrificed their lives for this cause in the past. Recently, Shri Ganga Ram Bishnoi, resident of village Chirai, Tehsil Osian, distt Jodhpur, Rajasthan, sacrificed his life for protecting Chinkaras in the area. The sacrifice has been made in the highest tradition of Bishnoi community. Ministry of Environment and Forests has given a cash award of Rs 50,000/- to his family and the Hon’ble President has awarded Shaurya Chakra Award (posthumously) to Late Shri Ganga Ram Bishnoi.
Shri Ganga Ram Bishnoi, son of Shri Phoosa Ram, aged about 35 years, was working in his fields on 12th August, 2000. At about 5-6 P.M. he saw a person, Pepa Ram, with a gun, taking aim at a wild chinkara grazing nearby. Shri Ganga Ram Bishnoi intervened to save the antelope from poachers but Pepa Ram fired and the chinkara fell on the spot. Pepa Ram and his accomplices lifted the chinkara and started running away. Shri Ganga Ram chased the poachers along with his brother and ran after them approximately 3 KMs. and caught the poachers. In the ensuing struggle poachers fired at Shri Ganga Ram who, died on the spot.
Shri Ganga Ram Bishnoi sacrificed his life while protecting the wildlife. He is survived by wife, two minor sons and three minor daughters. Ganga Ram Bishnoi was the sole supporter for his family
What needs a special mention is that the family of Shri Ganga Ram Bishnoi is not at all sorry for this death. They are proud the Ganga Ram laid down his life following the Bishnoi tradition of protecting the wild animals from the poachers
