1. TEES DIN SUTAK
Though SUTAK is followed in many other
communities and religions in different forms but 30 days SUTAK
is followed in Bishnois. It means keeping the mother and new
born baby segregated from house hold activities for 30 days.
This has many advantages, related to health & hygiene for
mother, child and family. Birth is the most important
stage(foundation) in our life and that may be the reason Guru Ji
kept this rule at the top.
Due to discharge of blood and other bodily
fluids during delivery mother & child's body is not clean and
the condition is not hygienic. The woman needs lot of rest, care
and nutrition food to recover. New born baby needs breast milk &
mother's love and care and protection from infections
30 days SUTAK helps in all these requirements,
therefore it is very important to follow.
In modern time, keeping the woman admitted in
hospital for certain period during delivery is for the same
purpose.
Now every doctor & health expert advocates for
mother's breast milk and advise its benefits but Guru maharaj
had long ago gifted this to our community in the form of this
golden rule.
In Bishnoi community it is a common to send
woman to parent's house for delivery especially during first
delivery. This is a good practice because woman feels more
comfortable with her mother and siblings and gets maximum care &
rest without feeling shy or without formalities/customs she has
to follow in her in-law's house. She gets nutritious food
specially made for that period e.g. liquid HALWA, PINDIA etc.
This nutritious food and rest helps her to
recover from weakness and also it generates more breast milk for
the child. This was the main reason of healthy Bishnoi children.
But nowadays some women do not like this nutritious food and
prefer other spicy food. This is not good for their and baby's
health because this type of food does not generate enough breast
milk required for the baby and does not help woman to recover
from weakness. Many women die during pregnancy or develop
complications and some of them require surgery due to weakness.
Some fashionable women even do not breast feed their babies due
to fear of disfiguring their beautiful body. But this is wrong.
Feeding the baby with breast milk is the most important for
mother & baby's health and it creates bond of love between
mother and child.
The children deprived of mother's breast milk &
love often develops negative emotions and bad habits and do not
have good health.
After completion of 30 days, the house is
cleaned and HAVAN & PAHAL is organised. By the ceremony of
giving PAHAL (sacred water) the new born baby enters in to the
Bishnoi faith/Community.
Please note that in Bishnoi community only 3
days SUTAK is observed after death of a family member.
Reason for this short SUTAK is that, the dead
body is handed over to mother earth and no remains are left
behind and life should carry on. There is no benefit keeping the
dead body and sad environment for longer time.
