4. “SHEEL, SANTOSH, SHUCHI PIARO”
Maintain good character, be content, and
maintain purity.
This rule contains 3 important virtues of human life SHEEL, SANTOSH, SHUCHI. SHEEL means good moral character, well behaved and modest. All the religions & faiths and holy books support this rule. Men & women should have sexual relationship through the holy marriage only and they should not be involved in extra marital affairs. Sexual desires should be controlled. Due to not following this rule nowadays, families are breaking apart, divorces are on rise, crimes against women and immoral activities are increasing. Human relations can be respected/honoured and boundaries can be fixed by following this rule. Otherwise all other holy relationships of mother, father, brother, sister, friend etc. will be in danger and there will not be difference between human and animal. SANTOSH means contentment, satisfaction, happiness. We should remain content & happy after getting the result as per our efforts & eligibility. Opposite of this is greed which has no limit or measurement and is major cause of unhappiness. Remaining content gives us satisfaction and happiness; otherwise our life becomes stressful which is major cause of hypertension & heart attack. It is true that money is necessary for day-to-day requirements and a decent life but then there is no limit of it. More money doesn’t give guaranty for happiness and satisfaction. Being content does not mean that we should sit in the house and do nothing. We should do hard work at the best of our level to fulfil all our responsibilities and if unfortunately we do not get the desired result then we should not be sad and depressed. Remember luck/fate starts where our efforts end. We should be happy and proud and thank God for whatever we have otherwise many other are not as fortunate as we are. If we are content then our mind will be peaceful and we will have a good sleep otherwise discontent is the main cause of crime, corruption, unethical practices, intolerance etc. Happiness is a state of mind and does not have criteria or scale but content do provide happiness. A poor person may be happy but a rich person may not be happy because he may be worried about keeping his money safe. Some parents are sad because they don’t have children but others are sad because their children are not as they expected. So this is a never ending greed which only leads to unhappiness. SHUCHI means purity, holiness, virtue. We should keep external & internal purity. External purity means we should keep our body, house, office, village/city and other belongings neat & clean and organised. Internal purity is to keep our mind & heart pure and without any sin or bad intention. Internal purity comes from positive thinking, love, honesty, peaceful mind and praying to God. Guru ji also said in a shabad, “TAN MAN DHOIYE SANJAM HOIYE, HARKH NA KHOIYE” means we should keep our body & mind clean, control our desires and not to loose our happiness & smile. If our mind will be pure, honest & peaceful then there will be less crime and more love & harmony. |
