22. “AMAR RAKHAVE THAT” Provide shelters for abandoned animals so that they can complete their life with dignity and don’t die untimely death (get slaughtered).
When Guru Ji founded Bishnoism that time people in desert area used to keep goats & sheep. It was difficult to keep male goat & sheep peacefully in the group and also it was not beneficial for them so people used to sell them and these sold animals were landed in slaughter houses and killed for meat. To avoid killing of these innocent animals Guru Ji asked Bishnois to keep them in shelter houses (THAT) so that these animals live their life with dignity. Later on Bishnois stopped keeping goats & sheep and started keeping cows & buffaloes but the same rule applies to keep male cows & buffaloes and other abandoned animals in shelter houses (Gaushala or Bhainshala) so that they do not end in slaughter houses and killed for meat. Therefore Bishnois should not sale bulls (male cows & buffaloes) to others who will either sale them to slaughter houses or castrate them to be used for torturous work.
We should donate for shelter houses which provide shelter to abandoned, hungry, sick and helpless animals. This rule again shows compassion for animals and teaches lesson of non-violence.
23. “BAIL BADHIYA NA KARAVE” Not to castrate bulls.
Bulls (male cow or buffalo) are castrated to make them pet & useful for carting or agriculture work. The procedure to castrate a bull was very painful. Guru Ji was very compassionate about all the animals therefore this rule was made.
24. “AMAL SU DUR HI BHAGE” Don’t consume or trade in opium.
In local Rajasthani language opium is called as AFFEM or AMAL.
Guru Ji prohibited consumption of AMAL/AFEEM (opium). This is a very bad drug & a slow poison and is very harmful for body & mind. Person gets addicted to this drug and spoils his & his family’s life. He becomes weak and can not concentrate on his works and makes wrong decisions under influence of opium and waste his earnings.
It is unfortunate that in some Bishnoi families opium is consumed and offered to others.
In Jodhpur are it is a custom to offer opium to guests. Many foreign & national tourists have reported that opium is offered to them by Bishnoi families. This is wrong and against Guru ji’s teachings and strict social & legal action should be taken against those Bishnois who consume or deal in opium. As per government laws also opium consumption & trading is illegal and considered a crime. Some Bishnois addicted to opium are called AMLI and others addicted to POST/DODA (dry outer skin of poppy fruit) are called POSTI and they have spoiled their life and given bad name to their family and Bishnoi Community.
The drugs e.g. heroin, brown-sugar, smack etc. are prepared from opium.
